About the education

Are you ready to revolutionize the world we live in? Are you passionate about making a meaningful impact on society? Are you interested in using technological opportunities to tackle challenges - through the lens of innovation, business, management, and sustainability? Computer Science: Innovation for Change in a Digital Society is a two-year master’s programme that integrates different disciplines to train future change leaders in a transformative digital society.

In today's dynamic, fast paced, and interconnected world, challenges we face require fresh perspectives and transformative thinking. This program goes beyond traditional computer science education by focusing on how technology can be used to address challenges at the individual, organizational, and societal levels. Through a dynamic and interdisciplinary curriculum, you will advance your knowledge and skills within innovation, business, digitalization, and sustainability. The programme prepares you to think outside the box and develop ground-breaking solutions.

The programme is relevant for students who have studied computer science or a related education during undergraduate studies. Rather than only pursuing advanced skills and exploring the latest advancements within computer science and digitalization, the programme complements your prerequisite knowledge with its emphasis on skills within innovation, business, change and sustainability management. The programme focusses on user-centric innovation within new and existing organizations and markets.

To survive the rapid change today, organisations need new capabilities and competencies in fields such as digitalisation, business development, innovation, technology management and leadership. Organisations are therefore looking for people who understand both technology as well as business and managerial aspects. By integrating advanced computer science knowledge with skills in innovation and business, as well as change and sustainability management, the master’s programme prepare you for a future career as a driver of innovation and a catalyst for positive change.

During the programme, theoretical studies are interspersed with practical work. An overall challenge-based pedagogical approach allows you to work with real-world cases from client organisations as well as your own entrepreneurial projects.

The programme’s four semesters are organised around a series of sequential learning goals, starting with foundational courses during the first semester. The second semester’s theme includes more practical courses and opportunities for applying different theories. The third semester focuses on applying all previous knowledge and skills in an innovative capstone project. The third semester also includes a research course in preparation for the master’s thesis, which is the focus of the fourth semester.

During your studies, you will be part of a vibrant community of like-minded individuals, including aspiring entrepreneurs, technology enthusiasts, and change-makers. Together with your peers, you will engage in hands-on projects, partnering with different kinds of companies, non-profits, and government organisations. The programme is also connected to research environments at the Department of Computer Science and Media Technology, including the Internet of Things and People research centre, the Software Centre, and the Data Society Research Programme: Advancing Digitalisation Studies. The teaching staff includes experts and senior researchers in the different topics of the program. They are involved primarily as teachers during the first year and primarily as supervisors during the second year.

By the time you graduate, you will have the skills to transform ideas into solutions, the entrepreneurial mindset to navigate the business landscape, and the ability to create sustainable solutions that make a difference. Whether you dream of launching your own company, leading innovation within an organization, working as a consultant, or something else where the skills and knowledge gained can be useful, this program will empower you to excel in your future career. After graduation you can of course also continue into PhD studies at Malmö University or other universities.

The only constant thing is change

Patrik Berander is the programme coordinator for the Computer Science: Innovation for Change in a Digital Society master’s programme.

Who should apply to this master’s programme?

Really anyone with an educational background that includes some computer science. This could for example be students with a bachelor’s degree in programming, systems development or interaction design, combined with an interest in innovation, entrepreneurship, business development and management.

What makes this programme unique?

The programme offers a unique dual focus on both technical aspects as well as on innovation, entrepreneurship, business development and management. Many master’s programmes are solely focussed on delving into one of these aspects while this programme blends these perspectives together.

In what ways do the knowledge and skills taught in the programme prepare students for the job market?

There is a saying that ‘the only constant thing is change’. This is very true in society today, with the big challenges we face on many different levels. The need for competent people who can deal with and drive change will only increase over time. Students in the programme will develop skills in change management and also complement their technical abilities with managerial abilities — a combination which is also sought after in the job market.

Why should students choose to study at Malmö University?

In 2013, OECD ranked Malmö as the fourth most innovative city in the world. Malmö has a lively and vibrant eco-system of businesses and organisations related to innovation and entrepreneurship. During the programme, students will be introduced to, and work with, many stakeholders within this eco-system.

How does the programme prepare students for future doctoral studies?

Students will interact with several of the research environments at Malmö University in different ways. This will ensure a smooth transition to doctoral studies if you are interested in pursuing a PhD.
