New Vice-Chancellor of Malmö University appointed

Mia Rönnmar is a professor of law and currently works as a researcher and teacher at the Faculty of Law at Lund University, where she also served as dean from 2015 until 2020.

“I feel happy and honoured to be entrust with this new role. Malmö University has an impressive and unique profile in how it approaches major societal issues, together with other societal actors, both in education and research,” she says.

Interdisciplinary and international collaborations have been a common thread throughout Mia Rönnmar's academic career. 'She has been a visiting researcher at the London School of Economics, the European University Institute, and Sydney Law School.

Her research areas include labour law and industrial relations from a Swedish, comparative and European perspective. She has been president of ILERA, the International Labour and Employment Relations Association, and is currently a member of the UN body ILO's Committee of Experts, which examines how member countries comply to labour law and human rights conventions.

In parallel with research and international collaboration, she has also had a strong commitment to education and pedagogical issues.

“In addition to working closely with students as a teacher and supervisor, I have also been director of studies and responsible for postgraduate education. Student influence, academic career paths, and meritocracy are important issues for me, as are issues of gender equality, diversity and work environment.”

The term of office for Kerstin Tham, the incumbent Vice-Chancellor of Malmö University, expires at the end of July, which means that Mia Rönnmar's first day will be 1 August. Having been based at Lund University for many years, she is looking forward to the challenge:

There are of course big differences but based on my interdisciplinary research profile with a connection to a socially oriented professional education, there are also many points of contact,” she adds.

“The board welcomes Mia Rönnmar as Vice-Chancellor and looks forward to the collaboration. Rönnmar has both a scientific and leadership background that provides a good starting point for her upcoming assignment at Malmö University,” says Olivia Wigzell, chair of the University Board.
