Research on display with Patrik Baard
What made you embark on research on climate issues?
In climate change and the current substantial species extinction, in addition to being two areas where our decisions can have significant impacts, we are confronted with several philosophical issues.
What made you embark on research on climate issues?
In climate change and the current substantial species extinction, in addition to being two areas where our decisions can have significant impacts, we are confronted with several philosophical issues.
The philosophical issues partly concern knowledge, such as how we can act under uncertainty, but also normative. That is, questions that concern justice and values. How is a potential right to emit greenhouse gases to be distributed globally when we know that a limited amount should be emitted to avoid dangerous climate change? How should future generations be included in our decisions? What values do other species have? What reasons motivate stronger environmental protection?
The article I will present combines my interest in climate justice and environmental ethics. In the article I look at different alternatives and evaluate whether they are consistent with principles for climate justice and environmental ethics, respectively. Interestingly, the two sets of principles do not always reach the same practical conclusion.
My research interest in these two challenges is partly motivated by the societal, economic and environmental impacts, but also of how they evoke interesting and stimulating philosophical challenges.
