Profile

Lara Wilhelmine Hoffmann, Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Iceland with an educational background is in Sociology (PhD, University of Akureyri, Iceland) and Art Studies (Master’s, University of Amsterdam, Netherlands).

Abstract

Migration researchers have long been interested in how migrants perceive and trust institutions. However, most studies on trust in institutions have been conducted in urban centers and large communities. This presentation sheds light on a different context by exploring the experiences of different actors in rural areas of Europe’s least densely populated country.

In Iceland, much like its Nordic neighbors, inhabitants generally report high levels of trust in institutions. Through a cross-analysis of studies conducted among diverse migrant groups and stakeholders, this presentation reveals how trust in institutions is experienced in rural communities. This presentation delves into how trust intertwines with migrants and other community members experiences, their interactions and relations, and processes of language acquisition.
