Abstract
This article explores how transnational repression affects Egyptian diaspora living abroad. Using the analytical framework of Albert Hirschman (1970, 1978) of ‘exit’ versus ‘voice’. The article shows that the Egyptian population abroad both activists and ordinary citizens are not able to fully exercise their freedoms and rights abroad even after ‘exit’. The article shows that transnational repression and political repression in Egypt influence how members of the diaspora groups engage transnationally with their home country and with their diasporic communities in Europe.
Drawing on both primary and secondary sources, including semi-structured interviews with diaspora members and activists living in Italy, it presents the transnational dimension of domestic repression on the diasporic communities and how this affects everyday life of these communities in Europe.
